The scheduled Bye-Elections in Ghana at the Assin-North Constituency took place today; Tuesday 27th June, 2023. The contest has been mainly between Mr. Charles Opoku of the sitting Government’s Party; New Patriotic Party and James Gyakye Quayson of the New Democratic Congress which is the contesting Opposition Party of The Ghanaian Anatomy.
The Member of Parliament; Hon. James Gyakye Quayson assumed office as Member of Parliament for The Constituency on 7th January 2021 after the winning the Elections for his Constituency in December 2020. However, his Parliamentary Position was challenged after Mr. Michael Ankomah-Nimfah filed a petition at the Cape Coast Court challenging Hon. James Gyakye Quayson to exit his office following his dual citizenship which breaches the Constitutional laws of Ghana. However Mr. Gyakye Quayson said he already nullified his other Canadian passport before contesting for the 2020 Parliamentary Elections. The Cape Coast Court ruled for Mr. Michael Ankomah-Nimfah’s petition but Mr. Gyakye Quayson still assumed his role. Mr. Michael Ankomah-Nimfah then proceeded the matter to the Supreme Court of Ghana which led to a final decision on the parliamentary office for that Constituency being vacant. Bye-Elections have been scheduled for Tuesday 27th June of which Mr. Gyakye Quayson was again nominated to stand for his Party; National Democratic Congress.
The National Democratic Congress are beyond doubt that their Candidate; Mr. James Gyakye Quayson will once again re-win the Elections which he did in 2020 by 55.2 percent to Abena Durowaa Mensah of the New Patriotic Party who was the runner up with 44.8 percent of the votes. This time the New Patriotic Party Candidate is Mr. Charles Opoku who is also massively being supported and could possibly win the Elections.
