MAIDUGURI FLOODS LEAVES THOUSANDS DISPLACED (NIGERIAN ANATOMY)

1 min read

Floods have hit zones in North Eastern Nigeria, displacing thousands and thousands of people settling in such areas and leading to at least 30 people losing their lives.

The floods hit Borno State during the second week of September 2024, after a dam overflowing burst its banks. The excessive rainwater due to the rainy season flooded Maiduguri and has destroyed people’s properties and buildings. All hospitals in the region, including the Maiduguri Hospital with over a 1000 bed capacity, have all been filled up. Wild animals also from the Sanda Kayarimi Park Zoo have all jumped into the streets, following the floods.

About a million people have been affected, leaving about 200, 000 residents in Maiduguri displaced. Maiduguri, a zone for Boko Haram Rebels, has seen its most dangerous flood, which is quite uncommon in the region. The Alau Dam, which was constructed in 1986 to help farmers in Maiduguri with irrigation, has led to thousands of people still trapped in their buildings.
