Ghana’s President John Mahama on 25th March 2026, delivered a speech at the UN, marking the International Day of Remembrance of victims of slavery. President Mahama pushed for a UN resolution denouncing the transatlantic slave trade and seeking redress for descendants of enslaved Africans. Addressing the gathering, President Mahama pressed on the fact that slavery was a social evil.

“We honour the memory of approximately 13 million African men, women and children who were enslaved over several centuries,” said President Mahama. 123 countries voted in favour of Ghana’s slavery reparations motion tabled by President John Dramani Mahama at the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade as the “gravest crime against humanity” was passed by the UN General Assembly on March 25th, 2026
President Mahama emphasized that remembrance is a crucial step towards reconciliation, both individually and globally. His address stressed the need to confront the enduring impact of slavery and strive for a world where all people are treated with dignity.
