President Yoweri Museveni has been declared as the Presidential Candidate of his Party, National Resistance Movement ahead of the January 2026 General Elections. President Museveni has been in power for six terms starting from January 29th, 1986. In 2005, he scrapped off the Presidential term limits and in 2017, scrapped off age limits.

The National Resistance Movement was formed from the merging of the Popular Resistance Army led by Mr. Yoweri Museveni and the Uganda Freedom Fighter Fighters led by Yusuf Lule. This merging led to the formation of the National Resistance Army which waged a guerrilla war to overthrow Tito Okello Lutwa and later became a part jn 1986, after they captured the country’s capital city, Kampala.

Yoweri Museveni born on September 15th 1944 studied Political Science at the University of Dar es Salaam. Mr. Museveni begun his journey in politics when he join in the Anti Idi-Amin protests. He formed the Front for National Salvation and contested for the 1980 General Elections after Idi Amin was ousted. The elections was a victory for the Uganda People’s Congress who won won 75 seats in parliament with 1, 963, 679 votes representing 47.1 % whilst the Democratic Party played second with 50 seats in parliament and 1,966,244 votes also representing 47.1%.

Ex-President Milton Obote was declared the winner but the elections was characterised with Controversy after Mr. Museveni claimed the elections were rigged. This led to the Bush War which led to Mr. Museveni ultimately seizing power in1986 and becoming the President since.
