Ghana’s President John Mahama at the 2026 State of the Nation address which took place today, has underscored the imperative for Africa to assert its autonomy, bolster regional economic cooperation, and project a cohesive stance on global issues. He emphasized the necessity for Africa to transition from reliance on external support to self-sufficiency, crafting policies that prioritize collective interests.
President Mahama acknowledged Ghana’s inheritance of a severely strained economy, weighed down by unmanageable debt and soaring inflation, which has inflicted considerable hardship on citizens. Nonetheless, he expressed confidence in the nation’s capacity for recovery, citing improvements in fundamental indicators. President Mahama’s “Resetting Ghana Agenda” and “Accra Reset” initiatives accprding to him, are gathering pace, aiming to reinstate economic equilibrium, restore public confidence, and yield tangible benefits for citizens.
Notably, Ghana’s economic performance has been robust, with the economy surpassing the $100 billion threshold, positioning it among Africa’s top 10 economies. The cedi has strengthened significantly against major currencies, while inflation has been brought under control, declining from 23.5% to 3.8% over a 13-month period thus at the end of 2024 to the end of January 2026. Inflation for locally produced goods fell by 22%, according to President Mahama.
President Mahama’s vision for Ghana and Africa is centered on sustainable growth, prudent fiscal management, and regional collaboration, underscoring a commitment to forging a prosperous and self-reliant future.
