African leaders converged on Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum (WEF), with President John Mahama of Ghana making a compelling call for Africa’s rise. H.E. John Mahama stressed that Africa can’t thrive alone, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and shared prosperity. He introduced the Accra Reset framework, aimed at reshaping cooperation between the Global South and North, focusing on long-term prosperity and self-sustainance.

President Mahama highlighted Ghana’s economic recovery as a testament to the power of focused and accountable leadership, despite global challenges. He lamented that Africa, despite supplying critical minerals, captures almost none of the value, stressing the need for a fairer global system. The Ghanaian president also drew parallels between the global response to HIV/AIDS and the current “pandemic”, urging leaders to mobilize against poverty, dependency, and systems that stifle African potential.

Other African leaders echoed Mahama’s sentiments, emphasizing intra-African trade, climate action, and sustainable development. The WEF meeting showcased Africa’s growing influence, with leaders pushing for increased investment, technology transfer, and climate financing.

President Mahama’s message was clear: Africa must take charge of its destiny. He decried the pandemic of unfulfilled potentials, where millions of young people face joblessness, crumbling health systems, and extractive economies. “If we can mobilize the world to fight a disease, why can’t we mobilize to fight poverty, dependency, and systems that lock out brilliant young Africans?” he asked, sparking a rallying cry for global cooperation and African self-determination.
