A prominent figure in Cameroon’s opposition, Anicet Ekane, has passed away while in custody, sparking widespread outrage and fueling concerns about human rights transgressions in the country. Ekane, 74, led the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM) party and was taken into custody on October 24, 2025, following post-election unrest.

Ekane’s demise has been confirmed by his party and family, who are reeling from the loss. The Cameroonian Ministry of Defense has pledged to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ekane’s death, stating that he received medical attention for a chronic condition while in detention. However, Ekane’s supporters and party allege that he was denied adequate medical care and vital medication, precipitating his decline. They claim that repeated pleas for his transfer to a hospital were disregarded, and his detention was unlawful.

Ekane’s passing has triggered demonstrations and calls for accountability, with many questioning the government’s treatment of dissenting voices and human rights in Cameroon. The international community is being urged to take notice and pressure the Cameroonian government to uphold human rights and ensure justice for Ekane’s family.
