Former President Peter Mutharika has won Malawi’s 2025 presidential election with 56.8% of the vote, marking a significant comeback at 85 years old. The Malawi Electoral Commission declared Mr. Mutharika president-elect, with Justice Dr. Jane Mayemu Ansah as his vice president-elect. Mutharika previously led Malawi from 2014 to 2020 and will succeed incumbent President Lazarus Chakwera, who garnered 33% of the vote.

In a televised address, Pres. Chakwera conceded defeat, acknowledging Mutharika’s insurmountable lead. Pres. Chakwera pledged a smooth transition of power, ensuring stability in the country. Mutharika’s victory is seen as a protest vote, with many Malawians seeking change due to economic challenges and perceived corruption under President Chakwera’s leadership

Mr. Peter Mutharika secured 3,035,249 votes (56.8%), while Lazarus Chakwera garnered 1,765,170 votes (33%), Dalitso Kabambe secured 211,413 votes (4%), and Atupele Muluzi obtained 102,744 votes (1.9%).

Mr. Mutharika’s swearing-in ceremony must occur within 7 to 30 days of the declaration. The president-elect faces significant economic challenges, including soaring inflation and foreign currency shortages.
