THE NIGERIEN, MALIAN AND BURKINABÉ ANATOMIES EXIT ECOWAS

1 min read

The Governments of the Nigerien, Malian and Burkinabé National Anatomies have exited their regional bloc; ECONOMIC COMMUNITY OF WEST AFRICAN STATES. This move comes as a shock to the bloc as no such exit has taken place in the almost 5 decade rule of the bloc.

The exit by the three countries was announced in a joint letter on all State Televisions of the three countries by their Ruling Juntas on Sunday 28th January 2024. This message has however come not as a surprise to members of the African Anatomy after ECOWAS suspended the three countries following coup d’etats that had taken place in their countries over the past few years.

ECOWAS which was established in 1975 with 15 member States was designed to promote cooperation and integration and secure economic development within the member states of the bloc. The ECOWAS bloc has however stated that, they have not been formally notified of any exit by any of the three countries identified above.
