Ghana’s legislative body has endorsed Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as the nation’s new Chief Justice, following an intense vetting process and parliamentary debate. The confirmation, which took place on November 13, 2025, represents a pivotal moment in the country’s judicial leadership.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, a seasoned jurist with extensive experience on the Supreme Court since 2008, showcased his exceptional legal acumen and grasp of judicial principles during his vetting by the Appointments Committee on November 10, 2025. He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the principles of transparency, efficiency, and respect for the rule of law in the administration of justice.

The confirmation process was marked by disagreement between the Majority and Minority caucuses, with the Minority expressing concerns about pending court cases and alleging that the process was politically motivated. Despite these objections, the Majority prevailed, with 163 Members of Parliament endorsing Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination and 69 opposing it.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is poised to be formally installed as Ghana’s new Chief Justice, succeeding Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, who was dismissed earlier this year. The swearing-in ceremony, to be presided over by President John Dramani Mahama, will mark a new chapter in Ghana’s judicial history.
