Assimi Goïta, a prominent Malian military leader, has been at the helm of Mali’s government since 2021, following a series of significant events that led to his rise to power. Born in Bamako, Mali, Goïta began his military career in 2002 and rapidly advanced through the ranks after graduating from the Joint Military School in Koulikoro.

In August 2020, Assimi Goïta led a military takeover that ousted President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, citing a need for reform and stability in the country. He briefly assumed leadership as the chairman of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, a military-led administration, before being succeeded by President Bah Ndaw in September 2020.

Undeterred, Assimi Goïta orchestrated another significant shift in power on May 24, 2021, removing President Ndaw from office and assuming control of the government. He justified his actions as necessary to ensure a smooth transition to democracy.Goïta has consistently advocated for African unity, strengthening ties with neighboring Sahel countries, including Burkina Faso and Niger, while criticizing the influence of former colonial powers in African affairs.

Assimi Goïta has implemented several key policies, including strengthening alliances with Russia and the Wagner Group, and increasing state control over the country’s mining sector by raising the government’s stake from 20% to 35%. He has also taken steps to consolidate power, dismissing senior military officers suspected of plotting against him, postponing elections in 2024, and dissolving all political parties in May 2025.

One of Assimi Goïta’s most notable decisions has been Mali’s withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a move with significant implications for the country’s economy and regional relationships.

Assimi Goïta has been serving as Mali’s President since July 8, 2025, and as President of the Confederation of Sahel States since July 6, 2024. His leadership has focused on asserting Mali’s independence and reducing reliance on former colonial powers. However, Goïta’s rule has faced criticism for concentrating power and limiting opposition voices. Many foreign leaders have expressed concerns about the lack of democratic progress in Mali.

As Assimi Goïta continues to navigate the complexities of leading Mali, the future of the country’s governance and development remains uncertain.
