President Paul Kagame has once again won their country’s General Elections with a landslide victory as the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and the Independent Candidate all totalled just 1 percent of the total votes cast.

In 2015, there was a referendum held which lifted the two term limit in the country. President Kagame’s victory enables him to stay in power till 2034.

In Rwanda, a term takes 5 years. President Paul Kagame has been President of the Rwandan Anatomy since 2000 and the de facto leader since 1994 when he ended the Rwandan Genocide in 1994.

President Paul Kagame was able to stand as a Presidential Candidate in the 2010 Elections because he claimed his first term of office was a transitional period and hence, it was not to be counted. This was taken to court and the interpretation was backed by the court in favour of President Kagame.
