Ghanaians are celebrating Constitution Day annually celebrated on January 7th, today to commemorate the day the 1992 constitution came into being, in 1993.

Today, January 9th, 2026, marks a significant milestone in the country’s history. The 1992 Constitution’s implementation paved the way for Ghana’s transition from military rule to democratic governance, establishing the Fourth Republic.

This foundational document outlines the country’s political structure, enshrines fundamental human rights, and defines the government-citizen relationship. Ghana has had four constitutions since independence in 1957, with the current one being the fourth.

The 1992 Constitution has been instrumental in shaping the country’s democratic trajectory, promoting stability, and protecting citizens’ rights. Additionally, the Constitution promotes decentralization and local governance, empowering local communities to participate in decision-making and bringing government closer to the people. This framework has been instrumental in shaping Ghana’s democratic trajectory and promoting stability.

As Ghana celebrates this milestone, citizens reflect on the importance of upholding democratic values and protecting the constitution. The original date for the celebration is January 7th but Ghana’s new enshrined laws state for holidays during weekdays to be celebrated at the end of the week.
