President Michael Randrianirina, Madagascar’s military junta leader, has dissolved the council of ministers, sparking cautious optimism among citizens. The move comes after Prime Minister Herintsalma Rajaonarivelo’s government faced criticism for failing to address pressing issues like water and power shortages.

President Randrianirina seized power in October 2025, following youth-led protests that ousted President Andry Rajoelina, who had won a disputed third term in 2023. The protests, driven by frustration over persistent shortages, led to Ex-President Rajoelina’s impeachment and Col. Randrianirina’s inauguration as interim President.

In a similar move, Kenyan President William Ruto dissolved his cabinet in July 2024, amid protests over tax hikes and calls for his resignation. President Ruto retained Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
The Gen Z collective in Madagascar remains skeptical about President Randrianirina’s move, citing concerns over the transition roadmap and “militarisation” signs. Will this change bring the radical change the youth are seeking?
