The African Union (AU) has lifted sanctions imposed on Guinea following a presidential election in December 2025, in which Mamady Doumbouya, the incumbent president, secured 86.7% of the vote. The sanctions, which were put in place after Doumbouya assumed power in a 2021 military coup, have been removed in recognition of Guinea’s progress towards restoring democratic governance.

The AU’s decision acknowledges the successful conduct of the presidential election, which marked a significant step towards the normalization of Guinea’s democratic institutions. President Doumbouya’s leadership has been characterized by efforts to promote national unity, stability, and economic development. His commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law has been welcomed by the international community.

The lifting of sanctions is expected to have a positive impact on Guinea’s economy, enabling the country to access international financial institutions and attract investment. As Guinea continues to consolidate its democratic gains, the AU’s decision is seen as a vote of confidence in President Doumbouya’s vision for the country’s future, and a testament to the progress made towards strengthening democratic institutions in the region.
