The New Patriotic Party, an opposition party in Ghana, being the runner up for the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, has announced their decision not to participate in the by-elections for the Tamale Central constituency.
Their decision comes in their shared mourning for the late representative of the constituency, Hon. Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, who passed on in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6th with 7 others in the helicopter at the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
According to the letter dated on August 6th and signed by their Party’s General Secretraty, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the decision was taken at a National Steering Committee held on Monday August 11th, at their party’s headquarters.
In the 2024 Parliamentary Elections, Hon. Murtala Mohammed won with 52, 263 votes whilst Sulemana Salifu of the NPP had Sulemana Salifu for the Parliamentary Elections.
They further stated that when the Electoral Commission announces the date for the By-Election in line with Article 112 (5) of the country’s constitution, their party will accord with the country’s national interest and will not take part in the elections.
