The World Health Organization (WHO), ending its 78-year membership. The decision, announced on January 22, 2026, is a significant blow to global health efforts, leaving the WHO without its largest donor and potentially crippling its ability to respond to health crises.

The WHO was established on April 7, 1948, with the aim of promoting global health and coordinating international health efforts. Born out of the ashes of World War II, the organization was created to address the health needs of a war-torn world and to prevent future health crises. Over the years, the WHO has played a crucial role in some of the most significant public health achievements in history, including the eradication of smallpox, the near-eradication of polio, and the development of life-saving vaccines.

Throughout its history, the WHO has been at the forefront of global health efforts, providing technical assistance to countries, setting international health standards, and coordinating responses to disease outbreaks. The organization has worked tirelessly to promote health equity, improve access to healthcare, and address the social determinants of health.

The WHO has vowed to continue its work, despite the loss of US funding, and has called on other countries to increase their support.
