Renowned Kenyan politician Raila Odinga has died at the age of 80. Raila Odinga passed away on October 15, 2025, in Kochi, India, where he was receiving medical treatment for cardiac arrest.

Born on January 7th, 1945, in Maseno, Kenya, Odinga was the son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice President. Raila Odinga’s entry into politics was marked by his involvement in the fight for multi-party democracy in Kenya. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Langata Constituency in 1992.

Raila Odinga stood for presidential elections five times, starting in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017 and 2022, but was unsuccessful each time. Raila Odinga served as Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013, leading the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) under a power-sharing agreement.

President William Ruto paid tribute to his legacy, and has declared a seven day period of national mourning during which the national flag shall fly half-mast across the republic of Kenya and in Kenya’s missions abroad.

Raila Odinga will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to Kenya’s democracy and his fight for the rights of the common man. He played a key role in shaping the country’s constitution and pushing for reforms. His legacy as a champion of democracy and human rights has inspired many Kenyans.

Raila Odinga’s life was marked by his passion for politics and his relentless pursuit of power. From his early days as a pro-democracy activist to his later years as a seasoned politician, Odinga remained committed to his ideals.
