Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli quit on September 9, 2025, after days of violent protests swept the country. Gen Z demonstrators led the protests, which started over a social media ban but quickly turned into demands for accountability and transparency.

Protests began initially from June 2024 when the government imposed a ban on major social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and YouTube. The ban, intended to suppress dissent, backfired, fueling widespread anger and frustration among the population, particularly Gen Z protesters. Fast-forward to September 2025, and Nepal is once again ablaze with protests. Large-scale demonstrations have taken place across the country, predominantly organized by young citizens. The protests were triggered by a nationwide ban on numerous social media platforms, but expanded to encompass broader issues of governance, transparency, and political accountability. At least 30 protesters were killed, and over 1,000 injured, with security forces firing live ammunition, rubber bullets, and tear gas shells at demonstrators.

Government buildings, including parliament, were set on fire, and politicians’ homes have been attacked. The violence forced the government to deploy the Nepal Army to restore order.

The army imposed a nationwide curfew and started patrolling streets and key locations. Army chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel urged citizens to stay calm and maintain social harmony. The army has arrested those involved in looting and violence and prevented jailbreaks. India in the midst of the crisis have tightened security along its border with Nepal, and several airlines cancelled flights to Kathmandu.
