Ghana’s President John Mahama delivered a speech at the UN, marking the International Day of Remembrance of victims of slavery. Addressing the gathering, President Mahama underscored the significance of all underlying the fact that slavery was a social evil.

“We honour the memory of approximately 13 million African men, women and children who were enslaved over several centuries,” President Mahama said. He highlighted the importance of initiatives like the Ark of Return memorial at the UN, saying they enable us to “document and educate; gain a greater perspective; and learn from history so we do not repeat it.”
President Mahama emphasized that remembrance is a crucial step towards reconciliation, both individually and globally. His address stressed the need to confront the enduring impact of slavery and strive for a world where all people are treated with dignity.
President Mahama is pushing for a UN resolution denouncing the transatlantic slave trade and seeking redress for descendants of enslaved Africans.
