The referendum took place in February which has made this née State, Southern Ethiopia Regional State, the third new state formed since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took over power in 2018. The other regions already in Ethiopia are as follows; Tigray, Afar, Amhara, Oromia, Somali, Benishangul-Gumuz, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR), Gambella and Harari Regions.
