Kenya marked a significant milestone on December 12th, 2025 at the Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi, celebrating 62 years since gaining independence from British colonial rule. The Jamhuri Day celebrations commemorated the country’s transition to a fully independent republic on December 12th, 1964.

The journey to independence was complex, shaped by decades of colonial rule, resistance movements, and political negotiations. Leaders like Jomo Kenyatta, Tom Mboya, Oginga Odinga, and Dedan Kimathi played pivotal roles in Kenya’s struggle for freedom.

The Mau Mau uprising, led by Dedan Kimathi, was a turning point in Kenya’s fight for independence, ultimately contributing to the British government’s decision to grant Kenya sovereignty. Jomo Kenyatta, as the nation’s first president, led Kenya from 1964 until his passing in 1978, steering the country towards stability and growth.

The term “Jamhuri” is Swahili for “republic,” symbolizing Kenya’s emergence as an independent nation. At the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations, President William Ruto and Ghanaian President John Mahama emphasized the significance of unity and cooperation in driving Africa’s progress. Thousands of Kenyans gathered at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi to mark the occasion.

President Ruto praised the nation’s founding fathers and highlighted Kenya’s resilience and determination. He reiterated the country’s commitment to prosperity and growth.
