Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally requested a pardon from President Isaac Herzog, citing the need to unify the country amidst ongoing corruption charges. The request, submitted on November 30, 2025, has sparked intense debate and division within Israeli society.

Prime Minister Netanyahu faces three corruption cases, including bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. The charges stem from allegations that he accepted luxury gifts and favors from wealthy businessmen, including cigars, jewelry, and champagne, in exchange for political favors. He is also accused of attempting to negotiate favorable media coverage with two Israeli media outlets.

Mr. Netanyahu’s trial has been ongoing for five years, with the prime minister denying any wrongdoing and claiming the charges are politically motivated. The pardon request argues that the trial is hindering his ability to govern and is causing national division. Netanyahu’s lawyers have submitted a 111-page letter to President Herzog, stating that the trial is expected to continue for many more years and is causing significant harm to the country.

The pardon request has been met with opposition from some politicians and legal experts, who argue that it would undermine the rule of law and set a dangerous precedent. Opposition leader Yair Lapid has stated that Netanyahu should not be pardoned without admitting guilt, expressing remorse, and withdrawing from political life. If granted, the pardon would likely be challenged in the Supreme Court, potentially leading to further controversy and division.
