Accra, Ghanaian Anatomy -The Government of the Ghanaian Anatomy has officially reinstated September 21st as Founders’ Day, paying tribute to the birthday of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the nation’s first President. This move reverses the previous designation of August 4th as Founders’ Day and merges it with Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day initially on September Day.

The new designation honors Dr. Nkrumah’s pivotal role in the Ghanaian Anatomy’s independence struggle, recognizing his resolute efforts to secure freedom and self-determination for the country. These changes were announced by the Interior Minister, Hon. Mubarak Muntaka, on June 25th at their Parliament following the passing of the new Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Ammendment Bill 2025, which removed August 4th initially celebrated as Founders’ from the national calendar and also marks July 1st as a national holiday celebrating Ghana’s transition to a Republic by the National Anatomy’s first President; H.E. Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on 1st July, 1960.

In 2019, President Akufo-Addo’s government changed Founder’s Day from September 21st to August 4th, which marks the founding of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in 1947. However, September 21st was maintained as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.

The UGCC, the first political party to be formed in Ghana, was pioneered by notable figures who played a crucial role in shaping the nation’s history. These individuals include J.B. Danquah, George Alfred Paa Grant, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, William Ofori Atta and Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey.
The John Mahma led government’s decision to merge Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day and Founders’ Day, to be celebrated on September 21st, reflects their commitment to recognizing and honoring Dr. Nkrumah’s contributions for the Ghanaian Anatomy’s history and development. This move is seen as a testament to Dr. Nkrumah’s enduring legacy and his role in shaping the national anatomy’s future.
