The New Patriotic Party (NPP), a Ghanaian Political Party in opposition, is on the cusp of a pivotal moment, as it prepares to hold its presidential primaries on Saturday, January 31, 2026. This critical election will determine the party’s flag-bearer for the 2028 general elections, with five high-profile contenders vying for the top spot: Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.
The party has undertaken significant reforms, introducing amendments to its constitution aimed at bolstering internal democracy, enhancing communication channels, and fostering unity among members. The revised constitution, unveiled in December 2025, broadens the electoral college to encompass a wider range of party stakeholders, including former executives, lawmakers, and government officials.

As the party embarks on this electoral journey, it is anticipated that the contest will be fiercely competitive, with 211,849 delegates poised to participate in the voting process across 333 polling stations nationwide. The electoral process is scheduled to commence at 7:00 a.m. and conclude at 2:00 p.m. The NPP has underscored the imperative of a peaceful, transparent, and credible election, with party officials imploring delegates to conduct themselves with decorum and respect.
The NPP’s evolution from its previous internal elections to the current contest has been marked by concerted efforts to enhance inclusivity and transparency. The party has implemented stringent measures to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process, including restrictions on polling day gatherings and the use of mobile phones in voting booths.
