The ANC pulled less votes than what they were expecting to win in last week’s elections. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on Political Parties in the country to come together as they find a common ground to form a coalition government. This comes after no party won a majority in their 2024 General Elections.

The ANC won 159 votes out of the 400 seater National Assembly. This comes as the first time they have lost the majority in their 3 decade journey.

For the South African Anatomy, the President is elected through their National Assembly by the majority of votes. The National Assembly which comprises of 400 Parliamentarians means the majority of votes must be at least 201. In this case where no Party has been able to get a majority, a coalition must be formed to elect the next President for the South African Anatomy.

African National Congress had about 40 percent of the total votes cast. The ANC has governed the country for the past three decades and their failure in not having more than 50 percent of their votes, means they will need a coalition before President Ramaphosa can President for a second term. The Democratic Alliance has stated that, they are open to have an alliance with the African National Congress.
