Prof. Alhassan Sulemana Anamzoya is a distinguished Lecturer and a former Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana. He is a business oriented with a lovely wife, Mrs. Samiratu Seidu and 2 children. His academic journey is marked by a strong foundation in sociology, which has enabled him to make significant contributions to the field.
Prof. Anamzoya holds a degree in Sociology and Political Science from the University of Ghana, Legon. He furthered his education by pursuing a Master’s degree in Sociology from 2003 to 2005. His academic prowess and dedication to research led him to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sociology from the same esteemed institution.

Prof. Anamzoya’s research interests are diverse and impactful. He has a special interest in Legal anthropology and his works primarily focus on chieftaincy and chieftaincy conflicts, migration, and social institutions. He has extensively studied the role of traditional leaders in Ghanaian society and the conflicts that arise from chieftaincy disputes. His research also explores the social and economic implications of migration on individuals and communities, and examines the role of social institutions in shaping individual and collective behavior.
In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Anamzoya has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills. He served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Development Authority from January 2020 to 2023. His administrative experience and expertise have been invaluable to the university.
In July 2023, Prof. Anamzoya became the first Northerner, specifically a Dagomba and practicing Muslim, to occupy the prestigious office of Head of the Department of Sociology. This appointment is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and commitment to academic excellence. On 5th September, 2025 the Department of Sociology crowned him with a citation for his innovative and industrious work done as a sociologist.

Prof. Anamzoya’s research has been published in reputable journals, including the Legon Journal of Sociology, Research Review, African Review, and the Journal of Legal Pluralism and Unofficial Law. His publications demonstrate his expertise in sociology and his ability to contribute meaningfully to academic discourse.
Prof. Alhassan Sulemana Anamzoya on 30th August, 2025 spoke on TV3, a private media owned station in Ghana, on the Akwatia By-election where he stated that the wife of the deceased, Ernest Yaw Kumi should have stood as the candidate representing the New Patriotic Party for the Akwatia by-elections. He spoke on how incumbency was a crucial factor towards development as he stated that when they vote for you, the government continues your project. This was a narrative as to how the government of the NDC even as a rival to NPP will continue the good works of the NPP Parliamentary Candidate as a reflection of the vote revested even again in their Party.

Prof. Anamzoya has been a strong member of the Ken 4 President Team. His commitment to Kennedy Agyapong is evident in the respect and admiration he carries whenever he is in the campaign trail for Mr. Kennedy Agyapong. He has always sort to blend Politics with Academia and is doing well with that. He recently in the first week of September stated how he has been impressed knowing Kennedy Agyapong just within two to three years and from knowing him, he could certify that Mr. Kennedy Agyapong had been a man not only having ideas but implementing the ideas with an example of Mr. Ken’s Steel factory, which according to Prof. Anamzoya, was the first settle factory to be produced by a Ghanaian in Ghana. Prof. Anamzoya encouraged Ghanaians to put their ideas into action.
Overall, Prof. Alhassan Sulemana Anamzoya is an outstanding scholar and leader in the academic community. His research focus, leadership experience, and publications make him a valuable asset to the University of Ghana. His historic appointment as Head of the Department of Sociology is a milestone achievement that reflects his dedication to academic excellence and his commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion.
