Yesterday, February 9th, 2026, youths in Ghana from the Mamprusi community stormed the Accra High Court in protest over the arrest of their leader, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, also known as Naa Sheriga Kulga II after initially storming on January 22nd, 2026. Abagre, a 79-year-old retired teacher, was granted GH₵100,000 bail by the court on January 22, 2026, in connection with the Bawku chieftaincy dispute.

Abagre is facing charges of acting as a chief without qualification, provocation of riot, offensive conduct, and fighting with weapons. He is required to report to the National Intelligence Bureau twice a week and refrain from presenting himself as a traditional leader.

The protesters expressed outrage over what they perceive as an unjust arrest and called for respect for tradition and justice. The demonstration highlights the ongoing tensions between traditional authority and modern governance in Ghana, with the Mamprusi youth advocating for recognition and respect within the country’s political framework.

The court granted bail after the Attorney-General waived his right to oppose it, citing Article 19(2)(c) of the 1992 Constitution, which guarantees the presumption of innocence. The case has been adjourned to March 23, 2026, for continuation.
