The Ghanaian Government has sprung into action to resolve the salary arrears issue affecting 6,500 nurses and midwives who were employed just before the previous administration left office. The Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives had taken to the streets of Accra on October 2nd to demand immediate payment of their 10 months’ salary arrears.

The Ministries of Health and Finance have joined forces to address the issue, with Ghana’s Deputy Finance, Hon. Minister Thompson Nyarko, Apem assuring the nurses that their grievances would be conveyed to Ghana’s Finance Minister, Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson. Hon. Apem emphasized that the government is working to resolve the issue and promised that the nurses would receive their salaries.

Ghana’s Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh noted that 8,000 out of 13,500 recruited nurses and midwives have already been processed and are receiving their salaries, with the remaining 6,500 being attended to. The government has pledged to include the unpaid salaries in the 2026 budget, providing hope for the affected nurses and midwives who are struggling financially.

The government has demonstrated its commitment to resolving the issue, with the Ministries of Health and Finance working closely together to ensure the nurses and midwives receive their salaries. The coalition has demanded a clear timeline for payment, explanation for the delay, and transparency in the payment process, which the government is working to address.
