In a monumental move, Ghana and Colombia have inked a historic pact to establish a direct sea route between Tema Port in Ghana and Cartagena Port in Colombia. This landmark agreement, sealed in Bogotá on March 23, 2026, is poised to catalyze trade, investment, and people-to-people connections between Africa and Latin America.

The accord was warmly welcomed by Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who lauded Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Elena Márquez Mina, for championing this Pan-African and Pan-American initiative. Márquez Mina, a trailblazing Afro-Colombian leader, emphasized the transformation of the Atlantic Ocean from a symbol of bondage to a conduit for shared prosperity and empowerment.

This maritime bridge is expected to unlock new avenues for trade, reduce costs, and enhance economic cooperation between the two nations. Ghana’s aspiration to become a key trade hub in West Africa is set to receive a significant boost from this partnership.
