Ghana’s President H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has removed the Chief Justice of the country, Gertrude Torkonoo, following a recommendation by a commission.

Gertrude Torkonoo was on suspension since April 22nd after complaints were lodged against her by 3 individuals. President Mahama therefore set up a five member committee to investigate her, under Article 146 of the 1992 constitution of Ghana.

Post the investigations, they found that she had misbehaved and abused her power, misused public funds and recommended that she be removed. The panel reviewed 10, 000 pages of evidence from 13 witnesses on behalf of Daniel Ofori, one of the 3 petitioners.

Under the previous government’s tenure, she faced a lawsuit for her removal but the then President, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo condemned it stating the allegations had some deficiencies. The petition was filed by Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare on December 17th, 2024. Prof. Asare claimed that Gertrude Tokornoo influenced judicial appointments by influencing President Akufo-Addo to appoint particular judges and then present those names to the Judicial Council for approval.

Her dismissal letter has been sent to her and she was removed with immediate effect on September 1st, 2025.
