BURKINA FASO DISSOLVES ELECTORAL COMMISSION

Burkina Faso has taken a radical step by dissolving its Independent National Electoral Commission. The decision, announced by Minister of Territorial Administration Emile Zerbo, aims to save the country significant funds. The commission had an annual budget allocation of approximately $870,000.

In the aftermath of the country’s first coup in January 2022, a scheduled election for July 2024 was postponed. Now, the Ministry of Territorial Administration will oversee future elections in Burkina Faso, according to reports from the state-run television broadcasting network, RTB TV.

The dissolved Electoral Commission was composed of 15 commissioners representing various political parties and civil society organizations. Minister Zerbo cited the high cost of maintaining the commission as the reason for its abolition.

This move might raise concerns among international partners regarding the transparency and fairness of future elections in Burkina Faso. The dissolution of the electoral commission could also impact the dynamics of political participation and representation in the country.
