Ex- Gabonese President’s wife Sylvia Bongo Ondimba is facing a corruption trial in absentia, accused of misusing Gabon’s presidential resources for personal gain. The trial, which began on Monday, involves 13 individuals charged with embezzlement, money laundering, and corruption, among other offenses.

The defendants, including Sylvia and son of Ali Bongo, Noureddin Bongo, who is also facing the corruption trial in absentia, were arrested in August 2023 following a coup that ousted President Ali Bongo, ending the Bongo family’s 55-year rule. After spending nearly 20 months in detention, they were released in May 2025 and are currently in exile in London.

Noureddin Bongo son of Ali and Sylvia Bongo has been vocal on social media, sharing hidden camera footage to highlight alleged mistreatment by the current administration.

The Bongo family denies all accusations, claiming they were subjected to torture during their imprisonment. They have expressed determination to clear their names, stating, they will fight to the end to ensure that the truth is known and justice is done.
