Onchocerciasis mostly known as river blindness is a parasitic disease which is transmitted through bites by black flies. The disease has been common in Yemen and Africa.
Niger through their Health Service has put in strategic measures to prevent the transmission of the disease in their country, making them the First in Africa, and the fifth globally for stopping the transmission of the disease through safety means.
The World Health Organisation in a statement through the WHO director, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus has congratulated the Nigerien Anatomy for their systematic acts to ending the transmission o the disease. Earlier on also between 1976 and 1990, Niger purchased insecticides to kill the transmission of the disease in their region. In January 2025, Niger has taken another significant step to halt the transmission of the disease in the region.
