Author: Isaac Kwabena Boadu

4th July 2025

The passing away of President Magufuli was felt with so much pain and grief as an African gem had gone back to his roots. However, the coming in of H.E Samia Suluhu Hassan as President of the Tanzanian Anatomy from March 19th 2021, who was initially the Vice President under President Magufuli reflects the renaissance of another Magufuli in the making.

President Magufuli was concerned strongly about the resolute stand of Africa in a multi complex world filled with diverse global challenges. He fought to keep Africa on the pedestal of global leadership. Today, we see those same veins in President Samia Suluhu, who has been elected as the country’s first female leader, building on the quest for a gender equitable world, we want.

President Magufuli was concerned with agriculture, mining and construction. President Sama brings a new perspective to the table. President Sama has transformed the economy of Tanzania with the country’s GDP growing in 2021 from $69.7 billion to $85. 42 billion. She has ben credited with implementing policies for a productive economy.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan has modernized the agricultural sector to increase production in the country and cut away dependency on foreign aid. She introduced reforms at the peal of her presidency rot pave the way for access to finance for small businesses and also eased restrictions for banks granting small loans to small and medium sized enterprises.

President Samia Hassan also introduced the initiative known as the National Girls Education Initiate working to eschew the gender imbalance in the educational sector and promote gender equity in junior and senior high schools across the country. Her resolve to also build 11 Universities of Science and Technology to garner more laborers who can work and build the country for productive investments is very well. The Dar es Sallam railway project between Dr es Salaam and Isaka which is expected to provide hundred thousands of jobs, ease transportation was activated by the $2,7 million funding the secured from the African Development Bank.

President Magufuli’s ban on political rallies wasn’t a dictatorial one but one to promote and ensure democratic development and also eschew violence and party conflicts in the nation. However, in a different approach by President Samia Hassan towards resolving this, she reversed that policy and has allowed opposition groups a political party to hold political rallies to allow for democratic dissent and collaboration and dialogues between different parties and politicians. She also reversed all media outlets that were prohibited under President Magufuli’s reign to operate, thereby promoting Freedom to operate and Freedom f expression.

President Samia Hassan’s appendage for political rallies and political democracy has also allowed for return of two opposition politicians namely Godbless Lema and Tindu Lissu, who were in exile. She was once the guest of honour in one of the country’s opposition parties’ programmes. President Samia Hassan also begun to ensure good relations with other countries since the country as a result of President Magufuli’s closed-door policy made the country mostly singled out. However, under this new reign, Tanzania has secured good relations with countries such as China, America, Dubai, Kenya and DR Congo.

President Samia Hassan has been able to have a formidable transition from Ex-President Magufuli’s second term in office when he passed on in March 17th 2021. President Samia has remained resolute in serving as President for the remaining years of Mr. Magufuli until his term ends by the close of 2025. Since President Samia took over office with over three years in President Magufuli’s term, she is eligible for one term and I urge H.E. Samia Suluhu Hassan to contest again as she can run for President for a term, for the change we need in Tanzania.
