Sudan’s military has announced a significant breakthrough in its battle against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as its forces have successfully liberated the city of Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan, after a prolonged two-year siege.

In a statement, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Sudan’s de facto leader, hailed the victory as a “heroic triumph” that has opened a vital supply route to the besieged city. “We congratulate the people of Kadugli on their liberation,” he said. “The armed forces will go wherever they are needed in Sudan.”

The siege, imposed by the RSF, had left Kadugli’s residents facing extreme hardship, with severe shortages of essential supplies. The city’s liberation is seen as a major blow to the RSF and a significant boost to the military government’s efforts to restore stability and peace to the war-torn country.

Al-Burhan emphasized that the military government remains committed to peace efforts, but warned that there will be no negotiations with the RSF while cities remain under siege. “We will not agree to a truce that allows the enemy to regroup,” he said.

The RSF has yet to comment on the loss of Kadugli. However, the military’s victory is likely to shift the balance of power in the region and could pave the way for further gains against the paramilitary group.

The conflict in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis, with over 40,000 lives lost and millions displaced.
