Parliamentary proceedings for the Ghanaian Anatomy have been suspended after parliamentarians from the majority side walked out of parliament on Tuesday November 5th. Hon. Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, majority leader in parliament for the Ghanaian Anatomy, has explained the reason for his party’s absence from the parliamentary proceedings on Thursday, November 7th, 2024.

Hon. Kwamina Afenyo-Markin stated that the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin, had betrayed his party as he allowed his party; New Patriotic Party sat at the minority whilst the opposition sat at the majority of the house. Hon. Afenyo-Markin stated that they did not want to be part of an undemocratic setting, calling for the reason why they did not come for the parliamentary sitting.

The Speaker of Parliament suspended proceedings 2 weeks ago following clashes over which party was holding the majority. Four parliamentarians had switched sides and had decided to run for different parties in the upcoming elections slated for the Ghanaian Anatomy. This led to their Speaker of parliament declaring their seats vacant as he stated the constitution did not allow parliamentarians to defect.

The New Patriotic Party took the case to court to ascertain if the Speaker of Parliament had interpreted the constitution rightly. The judges asked the Speaker to suspended his declaration until they made a final decision. In the first subsequent sitting, Hon. Afenyo-Markin asked his members to leave the parliament after parliamentarians were seen rushing for the majority seat.

The Speaker said the NPP members there were not enough, and hence, he suspended the meeting indefinitely. In the 2020 elections both parties all had 137 votes but the NPP which has the sitting government in power became the majority after an independent candidate switched sides for the NPP.
